Services

What I offer

The counselling is the same in each case. What changes is where we do it, and how much of it involves moving.

Person-centred counselling

50 minutes, weekly

Open-ended one-to-one counselling in a quiet room in Frinton-on-Sea. We meet at the same time each week, for as many weeks as it is useful.

  • No agenda set in advance. You bring what is live that week.
  • Nothing is too small to be worth an hour.
  • We review how it is going every six sessions or so, out loud.
  • You can stop whenever you want to, though I will ask for a last session to finish properly.

Walk and talk therapy

50 minutes, along the seafront

The same counselling, outdoors and moving. We walk the Frinton greensward and seafront path, side by side, at your pace.

  • Side by side rather than face to face, which many people find easier.
  • Walking gives the nervous system something to do while difficult things get said.
  • No notes taken while we walk. I write mine afterwards, as I would indoors.
  • If we pass someone you know, I follow your lead. I will not greet you first.
  • Wet weather is fine. Storms and heat warnings are not, so we move indoors or online.

Online and telephone counselling

50 minutes, video or phone

For clients outside Essex, weeks when getting out is too much, or winter months when the seafront is not an option.

  • Secure video link, sent fresh before each session.
  • Phone works too, and suits some people better than a screen.
  • You need somewhere you will not be overheard. I will help you think that through.

Mindfulness and yoga

Classes, courses and retreats

Separate from counselling, and deliberately so. I teach gentle yoga and mindfulness in Frinton and Chelmsford, and co-run residential retreats in Morocco and Norfolk.

  • Chair yoga and mat-based Yoga Gently in Frinton-on-Sea.
  • Classes and courses at Yoga at the Mill in Chelmsford, and online.
  • Satvada Retreats: small residential retreats abroad and in Norfolk.
  • Counselling clients are welcome in classes, but the two do not mix in a session.

Fees

First conversation
Free
20 minutes, by phone or video
Counselling session
£55
50 minutes, indoors or walking
Concession
£25
A small number of low-cost places, offered on trust

Payment by bank transfer before or on the day. Sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice are charged in full, because the hour is held for you. Ask about a concession if the fee is what is stopping you. It is a short conversation and I will not ask you to prove anything.

What a first session is like

We meet, I explain confidentiality and its limits, and then you talk. You do not need to start at the beginning or tell it in order. I will ask some questions, mostly to check I have understood you rather than to gather facts.

At the end we decide together whether to carry on. If I am not the right counsellor for what you are carrying, I will say so and help you find someone who is. That happens sometimes and it is not a failure of anything.
